One reason that musicians (at least many of them) are neurotic is that we fail every single day. We fail when we don't practice, we fail when we don't practice enough, we fail when we don't play something the way it sounds in our inner ear, and we fail when we pracice too long past our effective limits and either burn out mentally or injur ourselves. Singers have coaches that they work with on new repertoire, athletes too. Instrumentalists, however, often work in their own private bubble, with an occasional session of playing for a friend or a former teacher once or twice a year at most.
Musicians rely upon themselves for almost everything - their livelihood, their inspiration, their motivation - it's no wonder that we're a bit screwed up sometimes.

See, this is why viola makes me feel guilty. It's always a nagging thing at the back of my head. ("Need to practice...need to practice!") At least I'm still a student, so I get lessons once a week, but things will be different once May comes around. Yikes!

wow. what a motivating essay. i mean, it makes me feel so positive to see some who's an established player use the word fail so many times.
i mean, it's a good explanation, and one that i hadn't heard expressed in that way, it just didn't really give me anything to feel good about.
and is it annoying that i wish he'd been more PC? like how he said singers and musicians rather than singers and instrumentalists or orchestra players? kyle always hated how PC i can be. but then, i always hated what a retard he can be. i mean seriously, what man in his right mind would break up with me? i am offended on principle. i am obviously the hottest thing ever, so anyone that would willingly give me up has to have a few screws loose. i wouldn't break up with me. then again, i guess i should share my beauty with the world. kyle has set me free for the benefit of mankind.
and that's where the rambling stops. i'm going to try to go to bed now.
haha, I like Jill. Yeah, I felt the same about the essay. It made me feel both better and worse that he feels like us. Ha, I didn't notice that he said singers and musicians. That's really bad....
and we're doing this why??????
